McFly's hit and miss Sunday, July 20, 2008 |

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

In the end, McFly didn't get the coveted number one this, but they sure made the headline by giving away their free album with Sunday's Mail on Sunday. I don't know the final figure of the CDs given away, but that wouldn't be a small number either.

I am not a real fan of McFly even though I did mention them twice in my still young blog (I miss the old Busted), but my admiration for their new album is undeniable. There wasn't much expectation for the album since their previous efforts weren't not much good according to my particular taste.

McFly did miss the number one spot, but their new album is such a hit. It is way better than their other albums, which sounded that they were trying so hard but didn't get it. It's a pity that they gave out the CD for free as if it were rubbish. On the contrary, Radio:ACTIVE ushered in a new era for McFly.

Now I am not sure how to blame for their failed attempt to established themselves as a serious band. McFly or Island? For the time being they seem to do better alone without big company's influence. They truly sound mature in the new album. The must is harder, but really harder, no gimmick. At some point they resemble the bands like Simple Plan. The last song on the album, which is properly named The Last Song begins as a ballad and turns into a adrenaline-driven hardcore epic, which reminds me of My Chemical Romance's arrangement of Welcome to the Black Parade.

Other highlights include B-side of the single POV, which appears in the album as a normal track instead of being acoustic. The Heart Never Lies has already been featured on their greatest hits album. Having only 10 tracks, the album has a lot of space to expand when it comes to the deluxe version to be released in September. At least 4 new songs will be added to the album. Call it a gimmick if you like, I think it will work in the end, because their hardcore fans are waiting for the proper release of the album in September. Don't underestimate their true fans. It is those fans who pushed McFly's singles onto the top spot everything time they got release, only to drop out of the chart quickly enough. So basically, the free form won't affect very much the proper release, which is a fact that McFly is sure of.

McFly or bust Thursday, July 17, 2008 |

McFly was leading the midweek earlier this week, but according to the latest statistics, Dizzee Rascal's Dance Wiv Me seems to be keeping its crown for the third week in a row. I don't want to see McFly on the number 1 spot again, but I don't see many merits in Dizzee Rascal's track either, even though it's better than his latest music efforts Maths + English as a whole. Honestly McFly's comeback single One For the Radio isn't bad at all, if not perfect. It will be McFly's first single off an album which didn't reach the top spot on singles chart. On the other hand, there is still no certainty that Dizzee Rascal will get the top spot for sure, so let's wait until this Sunday for the chart to reveal itself.
